Arch Manning Faces Tough Competition for First-Team All-America Honors
As Arch Manning prepares to take over as the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, expectations are sky-high. With Texas boasting the second-best odds (+500) to win the national championship, according to ESPN BET, Manning is stepping into a spotlight few college quarterbacks experience.
However, despite his immense potential and the Longhorns’ championship aspirations, some experts believe Manning might fall short of earning First-Team All-America honors. On3’s Ari Wasserman predicts that Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway will claim the top spot, with Manning settling for a Second-Team selection.
Lagway’s Rising Star
Lagway has emerged as one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the SEC. A dual-threat talent with a powerful arm, the Florida signal-caller played a key role in revitalizing the Gators’ 2024 season. His strong performances not only helped Florida regain national relevance but also secured head coach Billy Napier’s job.
Last season, Lagway completed 115-of-192 passes for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, earning him a spot on the Pro Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team. With a full offseason as Florida’s unquestioned starter, he is expected to take a major leap in 2025.
Manning’s Opportunity to Shine
While Lagway has already made a name for himself on the field, Manning spent 2024 as a redshirt freshman behind Quinn Ewers. In limited action, he impressed by completing 61-of-90 passes for 939 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions. Now, as Texas’ starting quarterback, he has a chance to showcase his talent on the national stage.
The defining moment in this debate could come on October 4, when Texas and Florida go head-to-head in Gainesville. If both quarterbacks continue their upward trajectory, this matchup could play a pivotal role in determining who ultimately earns First-Team All-America honors.
With Manning’s pedigree and Texas’ championship aspirations, he remains a strong contender. But with Lagway’s experience and playmaking ability, the battle for college football supremacy is far from decided.
