Quinn Ewers Battled Major Injury Throughout 2024 Season, Insider Reveals

As the NFL Combine approaches, several quarterback prospects have a prime opportunity to elevate their 2025 draft stock. Among them is Texas Longhorns star quarterback Quinn Ewers, who is set to participate in throwing drills—unlike Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, who has opted out. Meanwhile, Miami’s Cam Ward, the current favorite for the No. 1 overall pick, remains undecided about his participation.

Ewers entered the 2024 season as a projected borderline first-round pick, and after leading Texas to two dominant victories, he quickly emerged as an early Heisman Trophy contender. However, his production took a noticeable dip following Texas’ Week 3 victory over UTSA, and fans now have a better understanding of why.

Insider Confirms Ewers Played Through Major Injury

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero recently disclosed on Good Morning Football that Ewers played the majority of the 2024 season—including Texas’ College Football Playoff run—with a torn oblique, an injury he never fully recovered from.

“Another quarterback I can tell you will throw (at the combine) is Texas’ Quinn Ewers,” Pelissero reported. “I am told he is fully recovered now from a torn oblique, which he played with for almost the entire season. It happened in the Michigan game, worsened over time, but he is healthy now. His weight is up to about 215 pounds, and he’s been working in Texas with former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy.”

This revelation sheds light on Ewers’ statistical regression. Despite throwing for more touchdowns in 2024 (31) compared to 2023 (22), his efficiency declined. His completion percentage dropped from 69% to 65.8%, his passing yards per game decreased from 289.9 to 248, and his yards per attempt fell from 8.8 to 7.8.

Ewers’ Toughness Could Impress NFL Scouts

Ewers’ ability to battle through injury and still lead Texas deep into the College Football Playoff underscores his resilience—an attribute that could appeal to NFL scouts.

“What this guy has shown is an incredible level of perseverance,” Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian remarked. “That’s tough to evaluate at the NFL level. Some quarterbacks cruise through high school and college without real adversity, but Quinn has had to fight through injuries and challenges.”

With Ward and Sanders currently projected as the top two quarterbacks in the draft, Ewers’ draft stock remains fluid. A strong performance at the combine and his pro day could significantly boost his chances, potentially solidifying him as a top-three quarterback prospect heading into April’s draft.

As Ewers now enters the next phase of his football journey fully healthy, NFL teams will closely evaluate whether his toughness and skill set translate to the next level.
