Miami Dolphins Add Super Bowl-Winning Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. to Strengthen Defense
The Miami Dolphins continue to build depth in their defense this offseason, and their latest move brings in a proven winner. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, free-agent linebacker Willie Gay Jr. has signed a one-year deal with Miami, adding veteran experience and championship pedigree to the roster.
A Look at Willie Gay Jr.’s Career
A former second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Gay Jr. made a name for himself at Mississippi State, showcasing his athleticism and playmaking ability. Over 31 games, he recorded:
- 99 tackles (46 solo)
- 12 tackles for loss
- 3 interceptions
- 2 forced fumbles & 3 fumble recoveries
- 1 defensive touchdown
Despite an eight-game suspension in college due to academic issues and an off-field incident, his talent was undeniable. The Kansas City Chiefs took a chance on him, and it paid off. In four seasons with the Chiefs, Gay Jr. played a key role in their back-to-back Super Bowl wins (LVII & LVIII).
A Fresh Start After a Tough 2024 Season
After leaving Kansas City, Gay Jr. signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the New Orleans Saints in 2024. However, his time in New Orleans didn’t live up to expectations. Playing in 15 games, he posted a career-low 28 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 2 fumble recoveries.
Now, he gets a fresh start in Miami, where he’ll join a revamped linebacker corps featuring Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson, and K.J. Britt.
What Gay Jr. Brings to the Dolphins
1. Championship Experience – As a two-time Super Bowl champion, he knows what it takes to win.
2. Athleticism & Versatility – Gay Jr. can drop into coverage, rush the passer, and stop the run.
3. Veteran Depth – With injuries a constant concern, having an experienced linebacker is crucial.
While Gay Jr. may not be a headline-grabbing signing, he brings valuable experience and depth to a Dolphins team looking to solidify its defense. If he can regain his form from his Kansas City days, this low-risk signing could turn into a major asset for Miami’s playoff push in 2025.
