From Tragedy to Tribute: Nottingham Panthers Retire Adam Johnson’s No. 47
It is just over one year since an unfortunate event that happened in the hockey world. Former NHL player who was with the Nottingham Panthers in the UK’s Elite Ice Hockey League died on Wednesday, October 2023 in a car crash, and his name was Adam Johnson. Johnson received the fatal injury during a game against the Sheffield Steelers when the neck of the player was slit by a skate of Matt Petgrave.
To honour Johnson’s memory, the Panthers unveiled plans to retire last year his jersey number 47. Johnson’s family including his aunt Lynn DeGrio were present during this gesture of respect which became official on Saturday during an emotional ceremony conducted at their home ground. This event was on the team YouTube channel with speeches that were very emotional.
Adam was a natural and a real person and did not come across as boastful in any manner. We have never heard him brag about his achievements,” remarked DeGrio at her speech which was spotted by the Associated Press. He was known for his joyful disposition and a disposition to engage others in funny banter in a dim hall with light spiced up by cigarettes. He even thought about his future day, night and in between, often with Ryan Wolfe on his side.
Nottingham Panthers’ CEO, Omar Pacha said, Johnson is not only a great player but even more a great person.
As to the circumstances under which Johnson died, the English authorities are still conducting an investigation, although one man is still a suspect in a manslaughter case.
The recipient of the shot was able to break his neck; ever since that incident many different questions have arisen on player protection – something that is vital in the game of hockey: the protection of the neck. Therefore, leagues and organization, like AMHL and USA hockey require all or some age groups to wear neck guards. Even though the NHL has not implemented mandatory neck protection, usage is on the rise by players as a preventive wear.
