From Court to Content Creation: Liz Cambage Makes $1.5M a Year on OnlyFans
Recently, the discussion ended about WNBA salaries has become heated. Even with the league becoming increasingly popular, players must either supplement their league earnings during the offseason by joining overseas leagues or start their own side ventures. But the one player has found an unconventional but incredibly profitable way to up her income: OnlyFans.
Australian basketball star Liz Cambage, a four time WNBA All Star, has had heads turned from her transition from court to online content creation. Cambage, after her WNBA career was ended after the 2022 season, when she earned $170,000 on a one-year deal, ventured into another chapter that has been much more profitable.
A Shift in Career and Income
Once she left the WNBA, Cambage has stayed in the game overseas by playing for Maccabi Bnot Ashdod in Israel and now on Sichuan Yuanada in China. But it was her pivot to OnlyFans, a platform known for empowering creators to money their exclusive content, that was her biggest financial success to date.
Cambage earned $221,450 in the WNBA, her highest earner season. But her OnlyFans venture supposedly rakes in her a ridiculous $1.5 million per year, nearly 7x more than her basketball income. Incredibly, she surpassed her WNBA salary in one week on the platform.
Beyond the Money
It’s undeniable — financial incentive — but it wasn’t all about the cash, OnlyFans joiner Cambage says. “I was always involved in basketball, but it wasn’t the only part of me and I was able to explore and express that on the platform,” she said.
Cambage’s move is part of a growing recent trend of athletes and celebrities using alternative streams of income to fill, or even replace, their income from traditional sources. OnlyFans offers creators the freedom to directly manage and monetize their content, in their own way, without dependent on intermediaries.
Breaking the Barrier and defying the Expectations
The fact that many WNBA players experience financial challenges doesn’t mean that Cambage doesn’t have a business mindset, it’s part of her story. Her decision also represents a wider call for discussions about a fair, comparable pay for women’s sports, where salaries in the league often fail to meet earning potential in other ventures.
Additionally, at the same time as Cambage’s success on OnlyFans defies expectations on how athletes, and especially women athletes, can stand at the center of their own stories and monetize their success.
A Bold Move with Big Payoffs
The decision to join OnlyFans has manifested already into a goldmine financially and personally for Cambage. Her story is a reminder in a world where athletes seek increasingly different forms of income that success can be as varied and sometimes the best results come out of the boldest moves.
